Tikal is a National Park that preserves the archaeological vestigious from the ancient Maya civilization.
It is located at the north of Guatemala, in Petén, wich is the biggest department in
Guatemala and counts with a variety of natural beauties.
So my expectations were huge because I have heared great stories from the place before and as I got closer, the bigger the anxiety.
You can reach Tikal by plane or driving. I decided to drive so I could take a look to the places around and make the experience even richer.
I took the road to the Atlántico and followed the signs reaching
Izabal and from there, the direct road to Petén.
The road is in great conditions and I got to Tikal even faster that I was expecting. You can leave
Guatemala city in the early morning and reach the park before lunch.
The Park
When I got to Petén, i went directly to Tikal. Once there, you have to buy the entrance tickets and follow a road into a natural reserve. Drive slowly as they will check your speed.
Following that road it is possible to see wildlife and the speed is a precaution to protect the animals that might get on the road.
Once inside the park I looked for the maps and saw the distribution of the temples so I could plan my walk.
I started to visit the small temples first, took a couple of pictures and followed to the main attraction, the bigger temples.
It was funny to see the friendly "pizotes" asking for food to the turists (despite that it is forbidden). Try not to feed them because even that they are friendly, they are wild animals.
Impressive view
Once at the top of one of the temples I was able of seeing the amazing view. I'm not a person who get impressed with easy but what you see from there is something worthy... jungle, jungle and more jungle, not to mention the mayan temples.
As one of the guardians was saying, we were lucky because the sky was clear all day and is likely to see rain very often. Too bad I didn't have enough time and a tent because you can camp there and see the sunset, wich as they say, is amazing too.
One of the things I remember the most, is walking in the jungle, as you can see monkeys, pizotes, big worms, birds, spiders and flowers not often seen. Even so, it was more amazing the sounds of the wildlife.
The guardian told me that in the past was kinda easy to see jaguars in the jungle but now with so many people walking around, noise and even the ilegal hunters, the jaguars have learned that the human being is not so friendly and tend to walk away.
Visiting Tikal is something I recommend, it is worthy the driving and the views from the mayan temples are amazing.
